Help is a red-headed stepchild

Tim Carmody, writing "Why We'll Never Have Innovative E-Books" for Wired, observes that Facebook's acquisition of Push Pop Press will inevitably result in the death of their forthcoming ebook publishing tool. A tool that promised to make innovative, engaging ebooks like Our Choice possible.

Perhaps the reason onscreen help evolves so slowly, and that promising innovations like the help system for Windows Vista are scuttled, is that it's difficult to marshal resources for such a mundane subject. If mainstream publishing can barely muster a breakthrough project, does product documentation have any chance at all?
