Retiring the food pyramid

U.S. readers have almost certainly heard that the government recently introduced a new way of presenting the daily recommended diet. The old way, a "food pyramid," has been the standard for a couple of decades.

The new presentation uses a more common metaphor; a dinner plate. From an instructional point of view this seems much more effective. It's less abstract and consistent with its message. But let's pause to acknowledge the contributions of the unknown instructional designers who created the old pyramid. It's a rare and notable feat to create a learning aid with such widespread use, acceptance, and impact. We should all be so fortunate in our careers.
