If you look closely (pretty much the rule for all these pictures,
actually) you'll see a giant arrow stuck in the ground, at the shore

A whacky, whacky shoe. Blue canvas, rubber-toed, lace-up sneaker in

glued-on traction strips. I think they should call it "platypus."

Tue, 12 Aug 2003 13:22:37 -0700

This is either the second car I've seen with a garden gnome in the

Donner Summit rest area, 6000 feet and 78 degrees, where an old hippie

gotta-stop-now crowd.

In a blip of synchronicity, the next random song on our iPod after
leaving this stop was by Lisa Marie Presley.

Long live the King!

Hope your weekend is just as beautiful.

Wed, 12 Mar 2003 11:29:16 -0800

My cabbie, taking me to my flight home. He's scratched the "no' off the
"no smoking" sign painted on the car windows. More accurately, he should
change it to say "sleeping," which is what he was doing in his car
outside my hotel.

To wrap this trip up, here's an upside pic from Hut's Hamburgers. Why is
it that when a Lone Star beer is involved my pictures are topsy-turvy?

Wed, 12 Mar 2003 06:42:18 -0800

Town Lake (aka the Colorado River) trail is overrun with joggers. The
city parks a flatbed with icewater dispensers for them, even when it's
cloudy and cool, near the Stevie Ray Vaughan memorial.

Wed, 12 Mar 2003 04:46:16 -0800

The Driskill Hotel is definitley the place to stay here. Built in the
late 1800s it has a lot of class and lovely touches. And yet another
lone star rotunda.

Enjoyed a sundae in their cafe - homemade peanut butter ice cream,
peanut butter cookie, and carmel sauce. Trying to put out the "nuclear
tacos" from earlier. The tacos were good, but by far the hottest ever.
Broke a sweat on the first bite; my eyes were watering by the end.
"Tears of joy" said the chef. (They're made with Red Savina peppers.)

I don't know which is I like best, the name of this band, the band
appearing next week ("The Menstrual Tramps"), or the bar itself -- The
Chuggin' Monkey. www.thechugginmonkey.com

Tue, 11 Mar 2003 16:24:47 -0800

Here's a bit of Austin culture, they all seem to load bike racks so that
the front tire is sticking up, wheelie style. In fact, once I noticed
this, I haven't seen a single bicycle racked in any other position. Good
thing I'm on foot, the peer pressure to adopt this would be hard to
resist.

Tue, 11 Mar 2003 16:07:29 -0800

American Spirit tobacco is a conference sponsor. They've wisely set up
their propoganda booth outside -- the only place where smoking is
allowed. If you don't step out on the balcony for a cig, you'd never
know they were here. The din from the construction site that the balcony
overlooks is but a minor obstacle for the die hard nicotine junkies, I
suppose. At least they don't have to go down 3 flights in order to light
up.

Tue, 11 Mar 2003 13:19:32 -0800

The Texas capitol building, whose lone star rotunda is both very
dramatic and is taller than the US capitol rotunda. (they're very proud
of this.)

Nearby, the Gov's Mansion is equally impressive in its stature. I bet
Dubya looks back fondly on living there. I know that I do.

Mon, 10 Mar 2003 13:03:56 -0800

The lunch line at the Iron Works BBQ stretches out the door for good
reason. It's Gov Dubya's fave, and my friend Joe's too.
The sampler platter is amazing -- sausage, beef ribs, brisket, 2 slice
of white bread, pickles, onion, potato salad, and a jalepeno on the
side. Oh, and an ice cold Lone Star beer. I'll eat again on Wednesday.
One of these pict of the outside is upside down. I assure you the beer
had nothing to do with that.

Mon, 10 Mar 2003 05:41:12 -0800

How can you tell it is Sunday night in Austin? Only 3/4 of the bars have
live music, and the place with well drinks for $1 marks 'em down to 25
cents.

Sat, 8 Mar 2003 15:04:48 -0800

An unswept sidewalk in front of empty lot is filled with stars, like the
Hollywood walk of fame. Here is Carol Burnett, found between Sam Houston
and Judge Roy Bean.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Fri, 7 Mar 2003 19:10:34 -0800

My first impression of Austin -- it's very flat. My cabbie said the west
side is hilly, tho.
I was surprised to find a live band in the middle of the airport.
The Texas-style Mongolian BBQ (that means they serve Dr. Pepper) across
the street from my hotel was quite good.

Sun, 2 Mar 2003 18:30:54 -0800

The Robin's Run housing development near us is about to sell all
remaining homes at an auction. A sign of the times in the valley. Three
years ago there was a lottery to be allowed to buy, now they just hope
that bids get up near market rate.

Sun, 2 Mar 2003 10:01:49 -0800

A lovely day in Mill Valley. And a great lunch at Pearl's Phat Burgers.
The individually made burgers are completly indistinguishable from
homemade.

Sun, 29 Dec 2002 06:54:01 -0800

Some shots from the missions at San Diegp and San Luis Rey. Our first
glimpse of the Pacific this trip was at San Clemente, where we had a
late lunch and spotted a house with neat climbing roses painted on its
front. We didn't visit Richard Nixon, however.

Fri, 27 Dec 2002 19:27:48 -0800

Yesterday's power-driving paid off today with some great siteseeing. Two
missions, walking Scooter down Hollywood Blvd, and sidewalk dining in
San Juan Capistrano.

I dug the "no riff raff" sign outside a cowboy giftshop, and Pedro's
Tacos really hit the spot and were easy on the wallet. Nearby, graffiti
proclaimed "viva zapata!"
